Greetings TAO Family and Friends!

In Mexico, the month of November starts off with Day of the Dead celebrations in full swing; November 2nd is a public holiday. This is also the month in which the Mexican Revolution is commemorated. The official holiday for the revolution is always held on the third Monday in November (this year, November 17); banks, post offices and government offices will be closed that day. Also for all of you golf lovers don’t miss out on going to see the OHL Golf Tournament at Mayakoba.

Almost like turning off a tap, the rainy season in Mexico slows to a relative trickle in November, while temperatures remain high. Unfortunately this does not mean that the threat of tropical storms – particularly on the Caribbean coast of Mexico – is totally eradicated, but the likelihood of such unpleasant weather is much reduced. The hurricane season officially ends on the 30th November.

Generally November is a great month to be living in Mexico, with hot, sunny days and cool, balmy evenings on the coast, and mild to cool conditions in the interior.

My thought of the month: Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. - Norman Vincent Peale

Have a great month everyone

Operations Director

Meet Claudia,
our TAO Foundation Director

Meet Claudia, our TAO Foundation Director

When I came to visit Akumal for the first time in 1970 there was not an aspirin available for the workers in town, they would take care of their pains with natural medicine from Maleno an old Xaman that used to live in back of las casitas. He was very knowledgeable of herbs and beverages he would make for us. When I came to live in Akumal in 1989 there was nothing even though 19 years later the workers were using cloves to take care of their tooth aches because Maleno had passed to a better life. I was determined to help the people that were here from the Yucatan that could only go home every 25 days for work and if they were to live here to try to do it in a way that it was not so harmful for them and the environment. I started with the making of letrins for each palapa and thought them how to wash their pots and pans correctly so that if the rats urinated on them it would not hurt them. I wanted to make a change in teaching the women about family planning and I assisted workshops in Juárez, Chihuahua, my home town and attended midwife courses the previous summer. From then on I had the first farmacia from Playa to Tulum. I asked a Dr from Cancun to teach me and to come and see the people from Akumal because we needed help. She came once a week and we worked in exchange for a stay on the beach. I treated and medicated about 1000 patients until the people from Akumal were given the opportunity to purchase property in Chemuyil where the IMSS clinic was and is still there, I donated everything to it and moved on thinking that no one would live in the surrounding areas of Akumal and thinking I did the right thing by not squatting on land that was not mine. I continued helping the people with family planning and individual health care from my home. I delivered 2 girls and one boy who are now parents. I sew up a lot of lips, ears and knees. I love to learn from the people and share what I have with them. Kids are my weak spot, I love to see them smile and learn.
